What Is the Right Toothbrush for Me? Jefferson, GA
Toothpaste Being Applied to a Toothbrush

With the vast variety of toothbrushes available in the oral care aisle of most stores, wondering which toothbrush to get can seem like a challenge. Some people choose on the basis of bathroom décor while others may choose the brush that catches their eye. To maintain your best oral health, there are a few things you really should look for in the ideal toothbrush.

Toothbrush Size

Mouths come in all sizes. You do not want to choose an adult size toothbrush for your child and likewise, adults should not choose a brush that is too small. The main thing you want to look for is the right size that will allow you to brush all your teeth, front to back, easily.

Most adults are comfortable with a toothbrush head that is one-inch tall and about a half-inch wide. This size is usually most effective. Larger heads are available, but they may not be suitable for smaller mouths. They can be difficult to use when it comes to cleaning the back teeth. The toothbrush handle should also fit comfortably in your hand.

Bristle Strength

The toothbrush bristles come in different strengths. Some are very soft while other are stiffer. Dentists usually recommend the soft bristled toothbrush and with good reason. Studies have shown that these types of toothbrushes are more effective at removing plaque and food debris from the teeth.

Soft bristles are also gentle on the gums and better for patients with tooth sensitivity. Harder bristles can cause erosion of the tooth enamel and gums, especially if you have a tendency to brush aggressively.

Along with bristle strength, you should also opt for a toothbrush that has rounded or feathered tips. These types of toothbrushes are gentler and safer for your teeth and gums.

Ask Your Dentist

If you are interested in getting the best type of toothbrush for your teeth, talk to your dentist. If you have sensitive teeth or gums or special circumstances such as braces, your dentist can recommend a toothbrush with will be ideal for you.

Toothbrushes that have the American Dental Association seal are also good choices. These toothbrushes have earned the approval of the ADA and meet the requirements for being safe and effective.

Choosing the right toothbrush will assure that you have the right tool for maintaining your best oral health. At Jefferson Dental, we are happy to help you keep your smile healthy and looking good. Call us today to schedule an appointment for a dental examination and professional cleaning.
