The month of November is set aside by the American Diabetes Association as American Diabetes Month. This year’s theme is “Everyday Reality.” The hope is to highlight the fact that diabetes impacts nearly every decision made daily for a diabetic person. Factors like what you eat, wear, and how you take care of yourself all need to be taken into serious consideration as a diabetic. You can read more about their campaign here.
The theme of “Everyday Reality” serves as a good reminder for us at Jefferson Dental Care to highlight the necessity for optimal dental care for patients with diabetes as well. According to the American Dental Association, “Periodontal disease is the most common dental disease affecting those living with diabetes, affecting nearly 22% of those diagnosed…In fact people with diabetes are at a higher risk for gum problems because of poor blood sugar control. As with all infections, serious gum disease may cause blood sugar to rise.”
Due to the strong link between diabetes and oral health, it’s important to keep your oral health part of your “Everyday Reality” with your dental routines as well. If you have diabetes, Jefferson Dental Care would like to remind you to schedule regular dental visits and practice good oral hygiene.
Call Jefferson Dental Care today so we can arrange a visit to our office and help you achieve better oral health for every member of your family. We look forward to seeing you soon.
